Role for Natural Gas in UK electricity generation: Report

London, 22 April 2013

An IGEM (The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers) sponsored independent report published today will point to fossil fuels’ important role in the UK’s transition to low carbon electricity over coming decades, but warns of risks. The report argues that significantly decarbonising the power sector by 2030 will prove the most successful strategy on energy sustainability, security and affordability grounds, and that switching the UK’s reliance on coal to gas generation - while using fossil fuel power stations increasingly for backup purposes -  will be the most viable method of achieving this.

Accessing gas feedstock to support the development of new LNG

Houston, 18 April 2013

Significant liquefaction capacity will need to be developed during the next decade in order to meet LNG demand which is expected to nearly double by 2025, according to a presentation by Wood Mackenzie at the LNG 17 conference in Houston. This new capacity will in turn require 180tcf (trillion cubic feet) of feedgas, leaving developers with the challenge of accessing and developing these gas resources.

220 Gigawatts of New Distributed Solar Generation additions by 2018

Boulder, 17 April 2013

The global electric power industry is evolving from a financial and engineering model that relies on large centralized power plants owned by utilities to one that is more diverse, in terms of both the sources of generation and the ownership of the generation assets. Distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems offer the benefit of producing electricity onsite, thereby reducing the need to build new transmission capacity and avoiding line losses. According to a new report from Navigant Research, 220 gigawatts of distributed solar PV capacity will be installed between 2013 and 2018, representing $540 billion in revenue during this time.

Next wave of Qatari LNG may come from North America

Houston, 16 April 2013

Investments in new liquefaction capacity from the US may provide Qatar with greater commercial and political value than investments in new Qatari LNG capacity, according to a report by Wood Mackenzie

Additional Annual Energy Outlook 2013: EIA

Washington, April 2013

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released additional content of Annual Energy Outlook 2013 (AEO2013), updating and expanding on the early release version of AEO2013 Reference case released in December 2012. The release includes a Legislation and Regulations section that discusses evolving issues, a Market Trends section that highlights projections for energy markets, and a comparison of AEO2013 with projections from other organizations. Additional components of AEO2013 will be issued over the coming weeks.

China's power utilities exposed to water disruption

Hong Kong, 25 March 2013

China’s “Big Five” power utilities own and operate more than 500 gigawatts of thermal power plants, largely coal-fired, in the world’s second-largest electrical system. Every one of the Big Five – Huaneng, Datang, Huadian, Guodian, and China Power Investment – is heavily exposed to water supply disruptions due to the concentration of their portfolios in moderately to severely water-scarce regions, in particular the dry and industrial northeast.

As Cyprus Collapses, It's a Race to the Mediterranean Gas Finish Line

London, 23 March 2013

Cyprus is preparing for total financial collapse as the European Central Bank turns its back on the island after its parliament rejected a scheme to make Cypriot citizens pay a levy on savings deposits in return for a share in potential gas futures to fund a bailout. On Wednesday, the Greek-Cypriot government voted against asking its citizens to bank on the future of gas exports by paying a 3-15% levy on bank deposits in return for a stake in potential gas sales. The scheme would have partly funded a $13 billion EU bailout.

UK Shale Gas: Regulatory Update

London, 19 March 2013

On 13 December 2012, the UK moratorium on hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) of shale gas was lifted. On 5 December 2012 the government published its Gas Generation Strategy paper. The two events are, we would suggest, closely connected. On 19 February 2013 Alistair Buchanan, current head of Ofgem, the UK electricity regulator, articulated a stark vision of a Britain plunged into darkness, shorter working weeks and manufacturing shut downs as early as winter 2014 if urgent steps are not taken to address the country’s looming energy gap.

Fossil Fuel Still Fastest Growing Energy Source

Houston, 5 March 2013

The biggest energy challenge facing the world today is meeting the rapidly growing energy needs of emerging market nations, including the 1.3 billion people that have little or no access to modern energy, according to the World Economic Forum's Energy Vision 2013 – Energy Transitions: Past and Future report launched today at the IHS CERAWeek Conference.

Saving energy: bringing down Europe’s energy prices

London, March 2013

The EU could make net savings of €250 billion per year by 2030 if it reduces energy use 35% below 2005 levels, says a new report commissioned by environmental pressure groups. The report, Saving Energy, says that the EU will save a further €200 billion annually, if it meets a voluntary 2020 target of using 20% less energy than projected in 2005.
