The Deepwater Horizon disaster has been a tragic reminder of the hazards of the oil industry, and of deep water drilling in particular. In water more than a kilometre and a half deep, and drilling a further four kilometres below the seabed, the rig was operating in conditions that are awe-inspiringly difficult.
