Americans should be optimistic about natural gas supply

Washington DC, 21 January 2010

The American Gas Association (AGA) today issued an analysis on U.S. natural gas supply that details the robust supply picture in the United States and quells any doubts about the ability of natural gas to supply the country well into the next century.  The analysis, U.S. Natural Gas Supply: Then There Was Abundance, provides critical information on both conventional and unconventional natural gas supply sources.

“AGA believes that the strength of gas supply in the United States is not only founded on the abundance of the methane to be found in North America but also the diversity of those supplies,” the analysis reports.

“America will not demonstrate a secure, reliable supply of natural gas to meet a lower-carbon future based solely on shale gas, for example.  That security and reliability will come from all of the domestic supply sources available including onshore unconventional, deep-water, subsalt, arctic gas, tight sands in the intermountain west, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and an endless list of other options.”

The analysis provides clear, concise answers to commonly asked questions about natural gas supply, such as Canada’s ability to send natural gas to the United States and the implications of recent shale discoveries.  These responses leave little room for interpretation and aim to clear up misconceptions about the natural gas supply picture in the United States.

“Heroic assumptions are few,” the analysis continues. “The facts point to a versatile and competitive energy source poised to meet existing and incremental future demands for residential, commercial, industrial, power generation and transportation applications.”
