E.ON completes divestment of 5,000 MW generation capacity

London, 5 January 2010

Following approval by the relevant antitrust authorities, E.ON, EDF and EnBW have completed the swap of generation capacities, agreed last October.

As a result, E.ON is receiving power from 800 MW of nuclear power capacity in France from EnBW. Furthermore, E.ON is acquiring EDF’s and Charbonnage de France’s 35 percent stake in the French energy supplier SNET, thus becoming the sole owner of SNET. In return, EnBW is able to obtain power from 800 MW of German nuclear power station capacity. At the same time, EnBW is taking over E.ON’s 50.4 percent stake in the Rostock coal-fired power station and is receiving power from the Buschhaus coal-fired power plant.

The transfer of E.ON’s 50 percent stake in Kraftwerk Mehrum GmbH, likewise agreed in October between E.ON and Stadtwerke Hannover, has also been finalised. In return, E.ON is receiving a cash payment from Stadtwerke Hannover.

The transactions form part of the measures committed by E.ON to the EU Commission in 2008 to promote competition in the German energy market. In total, E.ON made a commitment to sell about 5,000 MW of its generation capacity and also its ultra high-voltage grid in Germany. With the latest transactions, E.ON has already signed agreements to sell around 4,800 MW of power station capacity in Germany to companies including Norwegian Statkraft, Belgian Electrabel and the Austrian Verbund.
