One unsung masterpiece of modernist absurdity is the late Kenneth Koch's play The Gold Standard. In it, two Chinese monks discuss how gold stored at Fort Knox can give value to the US dollar. Gold, they conclude, derives intrinsic value from its malleability into statues of Buddha - something the Bretton Woods designers never considered.
