Glasenberg has long dreamed of merger

The joke in trading circles has been that Xstrata's name, a consultancy's invention combining extraction and strata, actually stood for Glencore's exit strategy. Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive at commodities trader Glencore, took the joke in good spirit. But rather than an exit, for him Xstrata was a long-held hope.
