The debate over whether high oil prices are the result of tight fundamentals or pure financial speculation is heating up, and economists are trading heavy punches.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission – the US regulator – recently organised a conference to discuss new academic research, including a high profile paper by Stanford University’s Kenneth Singleton that largely blamed speculators for the rise in prices.
