It is Saturday morning at the Superblock mall in downtown Balikpapan, a mining town of less than half a million people on the eastern coast of the island of Borneo. Shoppers throng stalls of Telkomsel, the state-owned Indonesian mobile phone company, where young saleswomen in red-and-white uniforms carry thick wads of receipts for Nokia, BlackBerry and Apple smartphones.
