In a recent article ("Case for commodity futures is weak," FTfm, June 21, 2010) James Mackintosh argues that the strategic role of commodity futures is weaker than we once thought. One of the strategic roles that is being questioned is the ability of commodity futures to generate positive returns in the long-run as in the future supply might not be as stretched, and demand as high, as in the past.
